On 17th December, 1903, Teutonic arrived in New York at the end of a voyage which saw her masthead struck by lightning. She was covered for half her length in a heavy coat of ice, and reportedly carried 2,800 bags of mail - "the largest number ever brought here by one ship." Among her passengers were two prisoners accused of murder in West Middleton, Pennsylvania and also 154 passengers who were aboard the Red Star Line's Kroonland when she lost her rudder in a "terrific"storm on 7th December and became the first ship to use wireless in distress.
