Mersey was purchased by J. Bruce Ismay in 1908 for use as an ocean-going training ship. She was steel-hulled and the first sailing ship to be fitted with radio equipment. After the outbreak of the Great War in 1914, the vessel was sold - her Captain and crew were considered to be more useful in other capacities.
