On 30th December 1893, Gothic made her maiden voyage (from London and Plymouth to Wellington, via Cape Town). She was the first twin screw on the White Star/Shaw, Savill & Albion joint service and the largest vessel (7755 tons) to enter the Port of London at that time. Late in 1894 she set a Plymouth-Wellington record of 37 days 10 hours, 16 min, 14.16 knots.
