Originally built for the Leyland Line and named Honoverian, White Star acquired her in 1903 in a transfer arrangement and renamed her Cretic. Both firms were part of the I.M.M. group; WS was often given preferential treatment in such matters because it was regarded as the most prestigious element of I.M.M.'s shipping empire.

On 5th December, 1905, Cretic (under the command of Captain Sealby) arrived in New York from the Mediterranean two and a half days overdue - having taken thirteen days from Gibraltar to Sandy Hook. The ship's officers described the trip as one of the most tempestuous voyages they had ever encountered.

In 1923, Cretic was returned to the Leyland Line and thereafter named Devonian for the remainder of her career. She was scrapped in 1929.
