On 6th January 1904, leaving New York in a dense freezing haze and sailing through heavy ice that has dislodged many channel markers, Bovic went aground in lower New York Bay. She was refloated by a rising tide before assistance arrived and then anchored off Sandy Hook for the night before proceeding on her way.
