On 16th January 1923:,Baltic II arrived in New York with four of her
officers (including Capt. John Roberts) reporting a close encounter on 11th
January with a marine monster resembling a sea elephant. The officers described
the black or dark brown creature as being twenty feet (6.1 m.) long and nine
feet (2.7 m.) wide, with ears and a snout resembling those of a pig, but
without a tail. As the ship neared, they say, it dove several times as if
being attacked from below, then swam away to the northeast.
