Launched by Harland & Wollf on 8th March 1871, Baltic
(the third of the original trio of modern White Star Liners) sailed on her
maiden voyage in September 1871 and on a later voyage in 1873, set a new
record by averaging better than 15kt during a West to East Atlantic crossing.
On 7th May 1888, Baltic was forced to return to Queenstown (Cobh)
for 10 hours of repair work when her low pressure cylinders failed. Later
the same year she was sold to The Holland-America Line for £32,000 and
renamed Veendam. She struck a submerged wreck and sank on 6th February
1898. |
